PORN.CAKE
APRIL 16 - MAY 8 2011
Beckett Theatre
By Vanessa Bates
Directed by Pamela Rabe
Composer & Sound Designer Darrin Verhagen
Everybody wants a piece...
What do Jamie Oliver, naturopathy, hiccups and the evolution of thumbs have in common? More than you'd think - and not all of it safe for consumption. With Porn.Cake the modern sex comedy is turned on its head and the curious nature of our indulgences and obsessions given an enticingly extra twist.
The Malthouse has delivered an exquisite production... Funny, disturbing and utterly in tune with the zeitgeist, Porn.Cake is a bold step forward in contemporary theatre. The Age, 4 1/2 Stars
Politely ferocious and charmingly obscene, Porn.Cake documents lives trapped in the extended moments post-adolescence and pre-senility - and then it fills your heart with joy. Chris Mead, Playwriting Australia

SAPPHO... IN 9 FRAGMENTS
JULY 30 - AUGUST 21 2010
Beckett Theatre
Written & Performed by Jane Montgomery Griffiths
Composer & Sound Designer Darrin Verhagen
As Sappho herself reminds us: all education is a form of seduction. Your lesson begins now.
2700 years ago, Sappho is the world's first love poet, the tenth muse of the ancient Greeks, and the inspiration for every lovelorn writer and songster since. But history catches up with her, and over time, Sappho becomes just a gap to be filled with the lusts and desires of each new generation...
Sappho...in 9 fragments is a roller-coaster, tour de force through two and a half millennia of Sappho's story, weaving together the strange tale of her fragmented reception with a contemporary love story in her own words. As a timeless Sappho relives her uses and abuses through history, in the modern world a heart-broken young woman tries to piece together the fragments of her sexual awakening.
This production is less a palimpsest on Sappho's fragments, and more a work of art in its own right. And this is evidenced also in Griffiths' virtuosic performance. The Age, 4 Stars
This is a passionate engagement with the poetry, a multifaceted imaginative dance with Sappho's work brought with painful intensity into the present moment... Montgomery Griffiths's performance is outstanding… Not to be missed. The Australian

Mary Oslund Dance - Childhood Star
Portland State University's Lincoln Hall
Music by Darrin Verhagen
Vocals by Karen Knowles
White Bird's 2011 Celebration of American Women Choreographers culminated on January 20-22 with the world premiere of Childhood Star, from visionary Portland choreographer Mary
Oslund.
Mary Oslund's choreography is insightful, rigorous and passionate with an intricacy of movement that mesmerizes the viewer. The Oregonian has described Mary Oslund as one of the, "seminal figures in Portland dance," and Dance Magazine has described her movement as, "...serious and intellectual—the exploration of character and mood through movement is a constant in her work."
Drawing inspiration from literature, film, theater and the visual arts, Oslund engages her artistic and musical collaborators as true partners. The concept for "Childhood Star" grew from conversations with composer Darrin Verhagen, ending up as a 35- minute work that explores the challenges and unpredictability of a shifting environment embodied by Portland-based Christine Bourdette's sculptural set and propelled by Australian composer Verhagen's dynamic score.
